Artifact I: Science Interview
At the very beginning of the year I had my students answer “what is a scientist?” I had the students draw a picture and write a sentence or a few. I wanted to see what they thought a scientist did. After the pictures we had a discussion on what scientists do and who are scientists. I wanted to make sure the students knew that anyone can be a scientist. I then did a science interview on the whole class. This allowed me to see my students background knowledge and ideas on science. It gave me the opportunity to see where my students stood on their opinion of science. This lesson let me set up the year letting my students know that they are all scientists and science can be fun even though you are still learning. Now when we transition to science in the day, I call them my scientists and they become excited about the lesson.

Artifact J: Notecard
As Lee and Abell say in Assessing for Science Learning, “Teachers responses to student questions also influence student learning.” My response to this quote, as seen on the notecard, is that this quote is reasonable. Patience and attitude can cause a student to be engaged or neglect-ant of the lesson. I have found that my attitude in the classroom definitely sets the mood for the students. When I start the lesson off excited and animated the students are excited for the lesson. If I start the lesson off being quiet or dull, the students are the same way.
