Artifact G: The 5 E's
The engage phase is where the content is introduced. This is where you want to connect the content to real world situations. It is the chance to see what your students know about the topic and to get them excited for the upcoming lesson. It is your chance to “hook” the students.
Explore Phase:
This is the phase where students get to investigate. They have a chance to test their prior knowledge and ideas about the content. They are also given the opportunity to share their ideas with the other students.
Explain Phase:
The explain phase is the time where the students reflect on their findings. Whether it changes what they previously knew or it stayed the same. Based on the evidence they collected, the students come up with explanations. New vocabulary is also shared at time time to help the students connect what they have recently learned.
Extend Phase:
The is the phase where students take their ideas and connect it to the real world using evidence. The teacher wants to help the students “extend” their thinking into further subjects.
Evaluate Phase:
This last phase is where the students are showing what they have learned. This can be done through a summative assessment. It also shows if the students have grasped the concept in order to move on.
The 5 E’s are on the top of my list of things I have learned this semester. From the 5 E’s, I am able to create effective lesson cycles. I am still improving on creating these cycles but now I have a foundation to grow upon.

Artifact H: MACRO Lesson Cycle
By using the 5 E’s, I was able to create a detailed lesson cycle. Near the end of this semester I was more confident in planning lessons and now knowing the 5 E’s, I thought I could create an effective cycle. For my MACRO cycle, I was going to teach changes of matter. I created the plan using the 5 E’s and after receiving feedback on the plan, I implemented the lesson.
