As I went through school, science was one of my favorite subjects. I can remember quite a few experiences from most of my school years.

Recall:

In elementary school I remember learning about the water cycle in a bag. We drew water, a mountain and clouds on a plastic ziplock bag then poured a cup of water into the bag. Each person taped their bag to the window where the sun would shine on it and warm the bag up. Every day we would check the bag to see if there was any condensation and then watch to see if there was water dripping down showing precipitation. Another experience I had was growing a bean in a bag. I thought it was so cool watching the bean slowly grow in the paper towel and I remember wondering how it grew with no soil. The science fair projects through elementary school were always a blast! I made it to the county science fair in third, fourth, and fifth grade. I always liked conducting the experiments and coming up with ideas to experiment with. We also had a butterfly garden at my elementary school that I used to observe for my fourth grade class. We would write or draw observations of the butterflies and the plants they would hang around. We researched the types of butterfly and what foods it ate and tried to find other fun facts about the butterflies.

In middle school, I was part of an environmental team that helped promote cleaning the Brooker Creek watershed. We worked on spreading the word of how the watershed was being polluted. Our team would present to groups of people and have a visual representation of the watershed. It was interesting to hear everyone’s ideas on how to clean the watershed and trying to get those ideas to spread. I worked with this team from sixth grade to ninth grade.  Another middle school experience I remember is going to Nature’s Classroom. I thought that was the coolest place ever. We learned about animals, plants, and how to navigate through the woods using a compass. (Nature’s Classroom is where my liking for reptiles began.) This experience amplified my liking for science.

High school science was challenging but I loved it. Biology was one of my top favorite classes. The dissections were always interesting to me and I learned a lot. I will always remember dissecting the pig! It was absolutely disgusting but so intriguing. My biology teacher made class fun by bringing artifacts in and letting us handle them. I still remember most of the lessons from that class. The other class that made a positive impact on my liking for science was my Physics class. I liked this subject of science so much, I took AP Physics my senior year. We conducted several experiments, projects, and activities in the class. Every week we were doing something hands on.

I believe all of these experiences stand out to me because I was learning or working with something hands on. I wasn’t being lectured at the time nor was I working individually. Also, all of these experiences were positive so I believe that affects why they stand out.

Reflect:

The general characteristics of my science experiences have been hands on, interactive, and some have been collaborative. My teachers were enthusiastic about science and I was able to tell that they had a real passion for it. I think seeing my teachers feel that way, spread and made myself passionate about science. I think that passion gave me a positive and meaningful experience in science.

I feel like I have been relatively successful in science. I have always enjoyed the subject and found it interesting and wanting to learn more. I have done well academically in my science classes and performed well on projects I was given. I enjoy teaching or tutoring other students in science and I know, that when a student can teach other students on a subject, they have learned it successfully.

I would define science as searching, discovering, learning, and improving. You search for answers, you discover new findings, and you learn from all that. As you learn, you are improving your previous thoughts of science or thoughts you never had at all. My view of science is that science will always be there but it is always changing and building on previous discoveries.

My past learning experiences have positively shaped my definition of science. I have enjoyed science so much that I find it to be interesting and that there is always something new to learn. My attitude towards science is enthusiastic. I thoroughly enjoy science and always want to learn something new about it.
